About the Exhibition:
Anthony Gallery is excited to announce its latest exhibition featuring the work of Wu Yué in I’m Not Back I’m Better. The opening is slated for September 14th at 5pm at 1360 W. Lake Street, Chicago, IL 60607. This collection of works will be on display until October 14, 2023.
In Wu Yué’s artistic realm, ingenuity knows no limits. His oeuvre offers viewers a glimpse into a world where modern pop-culture icons, classical history, and dinosaurs harmoniously coexist. Seamlessly blending elements from academic Chinese painting and personal nostalgia, Yué’s practice hinges on selective refinement and removal. His artwork employs a range of both subtractive and traditional media, including bleach painting, carving, animation, and illustration.
I’m Not Back I’m Better embodies the fearless authenticity and courage of the determined looking to prove to themselves what is destined. In this exhibition, one common figure that Yue acknowledges is American Olympian and track-and-field sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, where he looks to capture and express a common thread between his work and hers. He shows appreciation for the essence of her determination, resilience, and her triumph over the stereotypes that clouded her path. The artist’s body of work stands as a testament to the power of experimentation, the allure of nostalgia, and an enduring fascination with intention and chance.
