About the Exhibition
Anthony Gallery is excited to announce its latest exhibition featuring the works of talented emerging artist Michael C. Thorpe. The opening is slated for May 25th, 2023 at 5pm.
In a constant state of freeness and unhindered by pretenses, Michael C. Thorpe embodies authenticity in his vibrant fabric portraits. Thorpe’s exhibition “Flying on a Moving Mountain” draws a story through eccentric shapes and lively hues which are weaved into soft materials. The work is both bright and large in scale, cultivating connection. Art is about engagement, and in his bold work, Michael creates a world that is meant to be experienced.
Thorpe’s work is deeply personal and is grounded in his connection to community. He uses his mother’s sewing machine and materials from his aunt’s fabric shop. Rooted in spontaneity and experimentation, his process begins with inspiration from a photograph and evolves to new landscapes of soft materials. Thorpe weaves brightly colored fabrics to create an embodied quilted “painting” that illuminates everyday life.
Michael C. Thorpe (b. 1993) was raised in Newton, Massachusetts, receiving his BA in Photojournalism and MA from Emerson College. Thorpe began his work in the field of photography, but eventually progressed into the language of quilting. His art is executed through his inventive use of textiles, fabrics, and quilting techniques.
