Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995, Atlanta, GA) is photographer and filmmaker whose work is characterized by its vibrant visual representations of Black life. He is consistently inspired by pastoral and domestic scenes from his upbringing in suburban Georgia, crafting scenes that embrace the themes of histories past while reimagining the possibilities of “Black utopic vision”. Prioritizing play, empowerment, and determination, Mitchell’s compositions introduce new aesthetics to reclaim a contemporary Black aesthetic, challenging art history’s narrow view of leisure, desire, and beauty as the sole purview of the Western world.

In 2018, he made history as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover of American Vogue for Beyoncé’s appearance in the September issue. The following year, a portrait from this series was acquired by The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for its permanent collection. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
