Orlando-born, North Georgia-raised Sydnie Jimenez draws on scenes from her upbringing as points of inspiration for her ceramic paintings. Centering her work around the representation of BIPOC youth and self-expression, Jimenez’s sculptures are an act of protest and resistance. Through her careful choice of subject matter and intentional synthesis of popular culture, she works to protect herself and empowers her community to engage in healthy self-care practices.

Jimenez’s ceramic figures are youthful and expressive, celebrating style, self-expression, and individuality in communities on the fringes of post-colonial society. Each work encourages the viewer to reconsider their contributions to archaic systems that qualify difference in relation to Eurocentric culture. Jimenez recently graduated from SAIC with a BFA in ceramic sculpture and is a recent recipient of the Windgate Fellowship and the SPARK Grant.
