Artist Bio

Sang Woo Kim

British-Korean artist Sang Woo Kim (b. 1980, Korea) studied fine art at Goldsmiths University in London, where he honed his artistic interest in identity. Raised in the UK by Korean parents, his work confronts the many alienating cultural factors that affected him from youth. Kim consistently employs abstract and textured media to explore themes related to immigration and cultural duality. Blurred lines and varying textures conceal and distort the individual identity of subjects, creating a sense of detachment that parallels his own lived experience. Each of Kim’s paintings suggest that identity is inherently influenced by cultural voyeurism, spotlighting the burden of self-consciousness in relation to public perception. Kim currently lives and works in London.
