Martin Syms (b. 1988, Los Angeles, California) film, video, and installation-based artworks are characterized by their biting wit and research-focused commentary. Encompassing publishing, performance, photography, and software programming, her expansive practice centers on performed and imposed identities as they connect to digital versions of the self. Resulting artworks challenge assumptions concerning racial and gender inequality in relation to radical traditions.

Syms received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007 and her MFA from Bard College in 2017. In 2011, Syms founded Dominica Publishing, a platform dedicated to ‘exploring Blackness as a topic, reference, marker, and audience in visual culture’.
