Artist Bio

Melissa Joseph

New York-based artist Melissa Joseph (b. 1980, Pennsylvania) blends her formal training in textile design with her Indian-American upbringing to explore themes of family histories and diasporic life. Employing photo archives, found objects, and fiber, Joseph reimagines the potential of her synthesized medium, crafting wool felts that blur the lines between painting, sculpture, and illustration.

Through her art, Joseph surveys the labor of women and her experiences as a second-generation American, navigating the complexities of identity and cultural intersectionality. Her pieces serve as visual and intellectual explorations of self, inviting viewers to reflect on their own heritage and the resilience of marginalized communities.
