George Condo

Artist Bio

George Condo

George Condo (b. 1957, Concord, NH) is renowned for his provocative, graphic works that synthesize figuration and abstraction in the style of artificial realism. His deformed and disturbed compositions mix madness and beauty in a decidedly chaotic output. Spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, Condo’s distinct visual language is heavily influenced by his deep understanding of Old Master painting, cubism, and pop art traditions.

Condo’s practice hinges on the portrait. His oeuvre is full of weird, villainous characters with jutting teeth, large ears and other disjointed features. This inventive cast of characters is marked as a singular creative species, asserting Condo’s potential to reconfigure the relationship between reality and imagination. His works pay tribute to the nuances of contemporary life, and are oftentimes punctuated with allusions to modern American culture. Condo currently lives and works in New York, NY.
