Friedrich Kunath
Friedrich Kunath (b. 1974, Germany) describes his colorful, tragicomic works as “Sunshine and Noir.” Focused on universal experiences such as love, loss, hope, and dejection, his work navigates the longing that is so characteristic of human existence. Inspired by German Romanticism and American pop culture, Kunath consistently blurs the lines between abstraction and surrealism in his multimedia practice, most often turning to paint to produce dreamlike vignettes full of irony and pathos. The resulting compositions are imbued with both tradition and modernity, embracing counterpoints and uncovering the extraordinary within the banal.
Originally from Chemnitz, East Germany, Kunath attended the Braunschweig University of Art. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
