Artist Bio

Isabelle Albuquerque

Isabelle Albuquerque’s (b. 1981, Los Angeles) dynamic practice marries ancient sculptural traditions with contemporary technologies, employing 3D scanning and robotic carving to transform historically charged materials into life-sized figurative sculptures. Primarily concerned with intangible states of transformation, her artwork speaks to the dynamics of sexuality and power throughout human history and to a present moment charged with unprecedented metamorphosis. Each form becomes a force of solidarity and pleasure— an activated site of resistance, ecstasy, and collective memory.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Albuquerque lives and works in the city to this day. She studied architecture and theater at Barnard College, and was a founding member of the performance duo Hecuba.
