February James (b. Washington, D.C.) explores the complexities of identity and relationships through her ethereal portraits. Rendered in a combination of watercolor, ink, and oil pastel, her deeply emotive paintings capture the emotional and psychological essence of her subjects rather than their physical likeness. Distorted, seeping features invite viewers into a space of subjectivity and fluid identity.
